THE EXCRETORY SYSTEM BY: DAVID, DAKSH, AND ATULYA

SUMMARY OF LESSON

VOCAB  Excretory system : remove waste and maintain water balance  Bladder : muscular system that holds urine  Kidney : a pair of bean-shaped organs located in the middle of your back

MAIN IDEAS All living things produce wastes. In humans, the excretory system removes wastes and helps maintain water levels Chemical reaction take place in your body that gets the energy from food During this process lots of wastes are made

KIDNEYS  The kidneys have a complex systems of special cells, pumps, and tubes that filters blood  The first step of the filtering process involves dumping the blood’s liquid parts into a very small space inside the kidney

BLADDER  Urine is stored in the bladder  Signals the noggin when it needs to be emptied  Eliminates liquid waste

HOW TO KEEP YOUR KIDNEY HEALTHY  Drink plenty of water  Eating healthy foods  Exercise a lot  Prevent all injuries

UNHEALTHY KIDNEYS  Falling down very hard  Car accident  Kidney diseases can occur to children and adults  Infected by infections from the urinary tract and cause kidney stone  If the kidney is in serious damage the body cannot survive

BEYOND THE BOOK

MORE ABOUT THE KIDNEY  Every human being has two kidneys  Each kidney has three part : the renal cortex, renal medulla, and the renal pelvis  The blood arrives at the kidney go through the renal artery, which splits in to many afferent arterioles

PARTS OF KIDNEY Renal capsule : outer membrane that surrounds the kidney ; it is thin but tough and fibrous Renal pelvis : basin- like area that collects urine from the nephrons, it narrows into the upper end of the ureter Nephron : these are the filtration units in the kidneys

BLADDER  The urinary bladder is a muscular sac in the pelvis, just above and behind the public bone  When it is emptied it is the size of pear  The bladder stores urine, allowing urination to be infrequent and voluntary  The normal capacity of the bladder is 400 to 600 mL.
