1 Chemistry Risks/Benefits Vocab March 12, 2012  Carcinogen- a chemical that causes cancer in organisms.  Cancer – a disease that is caused by abnormal cell growth and reproduction ( cellular mitosis). Tumors of irregular cells are cancerous growths.

2 Chemistry Risks/Benefits Vocab March 13, 2012  Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) – a condition of a child born to a mother that abused alcohol during pregnancy.  Heart Disease- A condition of the heart – death results from restricted blood flow to the heart caused by consuming foods reach in fats ( Cholesterol) and tobacco products.

3 Chemistry Risks/Benefits Vocab March 14, 2012  Kidney Disease – Kidneys that do not filter body waste properly. Often kidney stones are a result.  Asthma – Chemicals in the environment that cause breathing problems.

4 Chemistry Risks/Benefits Vocab March 15, 2012  Risk-benefit analysis- the process of weighing the potential harm a new chemical or technology has associated with it’s use.  Side effects –is the additional effect of an action (usually associated with taking medication), that is secondary to the one intended.

5 Chemistry Risks/Benefits Vocab March 16, 2012  Preservative- chemicals used to prevent food spoilage  Oxidation ( associated with foods) – the slow process of foods turning brown.
