OBJECTIVES Define career. Identify factors into selecting a career. Analyze importance of education status. Identify career requirements for careers in human services.

WHAT IS A CAREER? An occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and opportunities for progress.

FACTORS IN CHOOSING A CAREER Time Availability Some jobs are full time, others are part time. Some require 40 hours per week, others require more or fewer hours. Some are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., others have flexible hours. Some require a substantial commute or long periods of time away from home. CostsSome careers have more costs associated with them than others. You may find you must cover costs such as tools or appropriate clothing, continuing education or training, meals, transportation, and parking. In some careers, having an automobile is necessary to do the job tasks. RisksSome jobs have a high degree of risk related to safety. Others may have risk involving job stability.

DIETICIANS AND NUTRITIONISTS Dietitians and nutritionists are experts in food and nutrition. They advise people on what to eat in order to lead a healthy lifestyle or achieve a specific health-related goal. Dietitians and nutritionists work in many settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, cafeterias, and clinics. Some are self- employed and have their own practices.

STEPS… Complete an Approved Education Program in Tennessee Apply to a Dietetic Internship (DI) in Tennessee Pass the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) Examination Apply for Licensure as a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist in TN. Maintain your License as a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist in TN.

COUNSELORS School counselors help students develop social skills and succeed in school. Substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors advise people who suffer from alcoholism, drug addiction, eating disorders, or other behavioral problems. Mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists help people manage and overcome mental and emotional disorders and problems with their family and relationships.

SOCIAL SERVICES Social workers help people solve and cope with problems in their everyday lives. One group of social workers, clinical social workers, also diagnose and treat mental, behavioral, and emotional issues.

STEPS… The Tennessee Board of Social Workers issues four types of social work license. The Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker (LBSW) license requires a bachelor’s degree. The Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) license requires a master’s. The Licensed Advanced Practice Social Worker (LAPSW) and (LCSW) licenses both require post-master supervised practice. CONTINUING EDUCATION… Professional Counselors, Marital and Family Therapists and Clinical Pastoral Therapists are required to complete ten (10) clock hours of continuing education during each calendar year. Continuing education for license renewal is not mandatory in TN for dieticians. However, attending professional development courses are encouraged.

CONTINUING EDUCATION… Licensed master social worker: 12 hours for each calendar year. Courses include social work and professional ethics.
