Operational Modes ROR system –uses monthly synoptic magnetograms –offers ambient corona and heliosphere for archived data analysis ‘Realtime’ runs –uses daily updated synoptic magnetograms –ultimate goal to provide fieldline connectivity forecasts ‘Realtime’ cone models runs – goal to provide earliest prediction of CME arrival times Magnetogram Issues –Coverage and quality – impacts both ROR and realtime runs –Frequency – GONG much higher cadence, important for realtime cone models

Magnetogram Synthesis How will models use magnetograms to model evolving coronal structures? Next generation models must give the model developer the ability to construct global magnetograms with the best available data, on the surface grid of their choice, with the spatial and temporal resolution of their choice. –Includes adaptively refining grids Falls neatly into gap between traditional ‘responsibilities’ of modelers and data providers - who is going to tackle this?

Magnetogram Synthesis Must blend disparate magnetogram sources –Photospheric and chromospheric –LOS and vector –Limited fov, full disk and synoptic Temporal and spatial interpolation problem subject to complex model constraints, eg –div B=0 –Minimizing surface currents introduced at stitch-up lines –Force free boundary condition support for FFF models –Surface flow analysis for MHD - vital to include data quality measures with magnetograms –Conditioning magnetogram solution using coronal loop imaging

Magnetogram Synthesis (contd) Requires acquisition and processing of multiple data types (both magnetogram and coronal and chromospheric imaging). Chromospheric magnetograms - will also need to integrate data from multiple heights in the atmosphere – a task which will inevitably require model input. Requires a genuine ‘data assimilation’ supporting tool - perhaps the first real example of data assimilation in a solar context. Beginning to develop this infrastructure element –CCMC’s KAMELEON data formatter as core –Separate lightweight and heavyweight processing layers –CAD-like visualization support

Magnetogram Synthesis (contd) Soliciting requirements input from model developers and magnetogram providers eg –Model pre-processing requirements –What is possible in terms of magnetogram quality measures
