BEGGING THE QUESTION/ CIRCULAR REASONING BY: Jessica Greenwood And McKenzie Pedigo
2
DEFINITION Circular Reasoning-a use of reason in which the premises depends on or is equivalent to the conclusion, a method of false logic by which “this is used to prove that, and that is used to prove this”; also called begging the question.
3
UNIVERSAL EXAMPLES “This painting is trash because its obviously worthless.” “I think he us unattractive because he is ugly.”
4
EXAMPLES FROM THE CRUCIBLE 1 ST EXAMPLE: Hale “ But woman, you do believe there are witches in -- Elizabeth “ if you think that I am one, then I say there are none.” (pg. 200 Act 2) Circular reasoning is being used by Elizabeth because she uses a faulty logic that uses what Mr. Hale is implying to answer the question.
5
EXAMPLES FROM CRUCIBLE CONTINUED.. 2 nd EXAMPLE: Martha Corey’s Voice “ I am innocent to a witch. I know not what a witch is.” Hathorne’s Voice “How do you know, then, that you are not a witch? Martha Corey’s Voice “If I were, I would know it.”(pg. 207 Act 3) This is an example of circular reasoning because Martha Corey uses false logic by claiming she doesn’t know what a witch is, but then goes on to say that if she was a witch that she would know.
6
PICTURE ANALOGY This is consider circular reasoning because it uses a sense of faulty logic because it use part of the question to answer the question.
