A Job Versus A Career A job is work you do to earn a paycheck, the investment is purely to provide you with means. Many people aren’t invested in their jobs.

A Job Versus A Career A career is work you do, not only because you earn a living, but also because you find value and purpose in doing so. Many people feel “called” to their careers.

A Job Versus A Career An example of this might be: Job= working at Wendy’s during high school so you can buy the things you like. Career= working as a computer programmer so you can earn a living and advance your knowledge and ability

A Job Versus A Career This isn’t to say someone can’t have a career at a Wendy’s; people can attain managerial or supervisory positions there.

Finding Your Skill-Set This means identifying what you are good at, and enjoy. Some students at Simeon enjoy cooking, auto work or cosmetology; there are programs here for those students work on their interest and parlay that into a career.

Finding Your Skill-Set If you were interested in home building, you could polish your skills at a trade school. If you were interested in law, you’d do the same at law school Point being, when you find what you enjoy doing; find a way to get better at that skill, then find a way to make money doing so!

The cost of working… All work paths have their good points and their drawbacks. Musicians and Chefs have to work weekends/nights on their feet, these career paths can be fun, but you are working when your friends might want to go out

The cost of working… All work paths have their good points and their drawbacks. A high-powered business woman or man might make a large salary, but work so many hours, they have little free time

The Truth of Money and Happiness… Money is very important, but it is not the sole answer to happiness Lottery winners surveyed a year after their winning, report being just as happy or unhappy as they were prior to winning People making 20,000 a year report 61% “happiness” People making 90,000 a year report 52% happiness

Why Is This? Personal satisfaction, period. You can make/win/have money and be unfulfilled! If you value family, yet work so much you never get to see yours, making tons of money isn’t going to satisfy you…you’ll be rich and alone

Why Is This? Working the “wrong” career… If you are working somewhere, and you don’t feel like you are important, doing the right thing, or “in your place” you can make a ton of money but feel unhappy.

Find Your Niche… Identifying what makes you internally happy and doing that for a living is important to your self concept

Salary Versus Benefits Two job offers: 45,000 a year with full medical, dental, vision and vacation time Probable 60,000 a year with partial pay insurance and no paid time off

Salary Versus Benefits Your benefits can be worth more than your salary! Having full insurance coverage that your employer pays, as well as paid time off and a pension can mean a sustained quality of life through retirement

Advancing and Changing Careers You should always look for room to grow professionally, both from a knowledge-opportunity stand point and a financial-opportunity stand point Looking for these opportunities may mean changing WHERE you work or WHAT you do for work

Value of Education page 100 Look at Figure 7-2 Just consider what this means to you…

When Life Impacts Career and Vice Versa… Having children; the cost of a child between birth-18 yrs. WITHOUT the cost of college is between 139,000- 191,000! Getting relocated; your employer gives you a promotion and you are asked to leave Chicago and move to San Antonio…

Working For A Boss or Being The Boss… Being the boss is great as far as being self- made…you get to create your own thing! If you are successful, you can earn A LOT, and have personal satisfaction. BUT…1/3 of new businesses fail, there are NO guaranteed paychecks and the hours and effort required are immense. Is it worth the risk? That is up to you!!
