Lessons Aimed At Helping Saints Define, Describe, & Defeat Sin

Lesson 5 – The First Sin Gen 3  God’s response vv. 8-24  He enforced consequences vv. 22-24  The couple’s repentance is possibly implied vv. 20-21  However, a problem remained v. 22  God drove them out of the garden…hid the way to the Tree Of Life v. 24

Lesson 5 – The First Sin Gen 3  God’s response vv. 8-24  He enforced consequences vv. 22-24  The consequences of sin can and often do outlive the sin & our repentance  This is why we cannot afford to listen to the devil and “rationalize” re: his enticements

Lesson 5 – The First Sin Gen 3  The one “bright spot” v. 15  God gives a ray of Messianic promise  Even though sin is bad and brought man much harm & destruction (both on the first occurrence and still today), there was still hope

Lesson 5 – The First Sin Gen 3  The one “bright spot” v. 15  The “seed of woman” (someone specific) would crush the serpent’s head even while suffering a “bruised heel”  A reference to Christ’s painful crucifixion that dealt a crushing defeat to Satan Heb 2:14 1 Jn 3:8

Lesson 5 – The First Sin Gen 3  The one “bright spot” v. 15  Christ is identified as this “Seed” Gen 12:3 Gal 3:16  Even at sin’s 1st occurrence, we see… (1) …sin is man’s greatest problem (2) …Christ is the answer

Lesson 6 – Sins Of Omission  Failures to do right are as problematic as doing the forbidden  If for any reason we “omit God’s word” (fail to do what He expects us to do), we have truly sinned  Not a Biblical phrase…but a Biblical idea

Lesson 6 – Sins Of Omission  Omit / Omission (Latin - “to disregard”) Nonperformance of what ought to be done; failure; neglect; delinquency; default; dereliction” – American Heritage Dictionary

Lesson 6 – Sins Of Omission  Jesus spoke to this sin’s seriousness  Disappointment toward those who call Him “Lord” (with the right to command) and yet will not do as He says Lk 6:46  Such ones are “foolish builders” who hear but do not do / obey Lk 6:49

Lesson 6 – Sins Of Omission  Jesus spoke to this sin’s seriousness  We will always be “unworthy slaves” because we are only doing what we ought to do Lk 17:10  This shows there is a Divine expectation re: man doing what God says

Lesson 6 – Sins Of Omission  Illustrating this type of sin  Jeremiah reviewed why Israel suffered her calamities Ù they “…had done nothing of all that God had commanded” Jer 32:23

Lesson 6 – Sins Of Omission  Illustrating this type of sin  Jesus rebuked the scribes & Pharisees for their hypocrisy Ù they were faithful in smaller matters of the Law, but had left the “weightier matters” undone Mt 23:23

Lesson 6 – Sins Of Omission  Illustrating this type of sin  Jesus used a parable to show how those who fail to serve His people (even in small ways) will fare at the judgment Mt 25:41-45

Lesson 6 – Sins Of Omission  Illustrating this type of sin  The Law serves as a “witness” to those who “neglect” the greater salvation available under the confirmed gospel of Christ Heb 2:3 “Make light” Mt 22:5

Lesson 6 – Sins Of Omission  A person has to have a certain “mindset” to omit things from God’s will  Attitudes or dispositions that will lead him into such activity  Though not an exhaustive list, just a couple of suggestions…

Lesson 6 – Sins Of Omission  Why some have this type of sin… Ê Ignorance  A lack of knowledge will certainly lead someone to omit part of God’s will  Some don’t want to “…retain God in their knowledge” and behave in ways demonstrating this Rom 1:28-31

Lesson 6 – Sins Of Omission  Why some have this type of sin… Ê Ignorance  It’s not just limited to being untaught  It can be due to hardened hearts through sinful living Eph 4:17-19  God commands repentance of what He previously overlooked Acts 17:23, 30

Lesson 6 – Sins Of Omission  Why some have this type of sin… Ë Hard to do or receive  Some will not teach or practice a part of God’s will they find difficult  Their solution Ù they omit it  Peace with God only comes when we are willing to do His will Psa 119:165

Lesson 6 – Sins Of Omission  Why some have this type of sin… Ë Hard to do or receive EXAMPLES  Teaching on immodesty 1 Tim 2:9-10 1 Pet 3:3-5  Teaching on M/D/R Mt 19:1-12  Teaching on church discipline 1 Cor 5:4-5 2 Thess 3:6
