Humans have limited control over their own destiny, outside factors such as heredity and social conditions were the inevitable determinants. Emphasis on the despondent side of life. 4. A UTHORS Stephen Crane (1871-1900): An American writer who focused on the human mind, pertaining to fear and social isolation. His works include The Red Badge of Courage and The Open Boat. Frank Norris (1870-1902): An American novelist and journalist who sought to emphasize morality. Works: Mcteague and The Octopus Famous quote:“The novel with a purpose brings the tragedies and griefs of others to notice” and “prove[s] that injustice, crime, and inequality do exist.”
