Graphing Motion
2
Graphing Data Independent axis: the x-axis- horizontal Dependent axis: the y-axis- vertical The y values depend on the x values
3
Graphing Data Linear relationship, y = mx + b Ex. y = 3x +2 Inverse relationship y = b/x, b = rational number Ex. y = 5/x Quadratic relationship y = bx 2 Ex. y = 4x 2
4
Graphing Motion The velocity of an object can be found by determining the SLOPE on a position-time graph.
5
A changing velocity
6
Velocity vs time graph Is this a graph of “uniform” velocity? Is the velocity increasing or decreasing? What is the name for the rate that velocity changes?
7
We do not usually use the word deceleration in physics. Generally, we define positive or negative acceleration.
8
Determining acceleration from a velocity vs. time graph The acceleration is found by taking the slope of a velocity vs time graph.
9
Using a velocity vs time graph to determine displacement
10
The displacement is found by taking the area of a velocity vs time graph.

What is the acceleration? From 0 – 2s? From 2 – 6 s? From 9 – 11 s? From 11-14 s? From 14 – 22 s? The ACCELERATION is found by taking the SLOPE of the velocity vs. time graph

From 0 – 2s? 0 From 2 – 6 s? -1.5 m/s 2 From 9 – 11 s? -4m/s 2 From 11-14 s? 0 From 14 – 22 s? +1.4m/s 2 What about the displacement? Displacement from the starting point = the area of the shapes. Shapes below the x- axis will be negative displacement! Acceleration = slope
