What is Visual Studies? Established in response to West Kowloon – Hong Kong’s turn towards art The government’s aim: capacity building in a variety of areas having to do with art – teaching of art; museum work; art practice; cultural policy; research on art

What is Service Learning all about? Experiential learning Concepts taught in class are understood and tested through hands-on service-learning experiences Students come to see the impact of art and everyday aesthetics on well-being of our health Students become committed to issues having to do with art & well being, and with the environment They become connected with relevant communities in society

The students’ thoughts Cognitively challenged people are sweet people. Southeast Asian children are just like us. Some of the Southeast Asian children were born in HK, just like you and me. I now notice the ethnic minorities around us. We’re lucky to have born without any abnormalities.

Getting into Visual Studies The main selection criteria are: (a) the results of the HKDSE or equivalent, and (b) the applicant's GPA at the end of his/her first term at Lingnan. These criteria are equally weighted. An interview may be arranged if necessary.

The Structure of the BA Programme Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Visual Studies The Visual Studies Major consists of 48 credits, distributed across Foundation courses and Programme Electives. The four required Foundation courses are: “Philosophy of the Visual Arts”, “Introduction to Chinese Art”, “Western Art from Romanticism to Modernism” and “Introduction to Film Studies.”

Programme electives fall into four categories: (1) History of the Visual Arts & Aesthetics; (2) Service Learning; (3) Studio Courses; (4) Internships. Visual Studies majors must take 12 programme electives, totaling 36 credits, from categories 1-4. A minimum of 24 credits should be selected from categories 1 & 2 and between 3 and 12 credits from categories 3 & 4.
