2 National Curriculum subjects The National Curriculum, taught to all pupils, is made up of blocks of years, known as key stages: Years 1 and 2 in a lower school are known as Key Stage 1 Years 3 to 6 in lower school are known as Key Stage 2

3 The ‘New’ National Curriculum Compulsory Subjects: English, Maths, Science - Core SubjectsEnglish, Maths, Science - Core Subjects Geography, History, Art, DT, P.E, Music, Computing - Foundation SubjectsGeography, History, Art, DT, P.E, Music, Computing - Foundation Subjects -Schools have to teach R.E, although parents have the right to remove their child from the R.E. Curriculum. -We follow the Beds Agreed Syllabus for R.E. -Now a big emphasis on spelling and grammar. -Curriculum is far harder than before.

Our teacher assessment and the test outcomes will be reported to the local authority. Pupils will take the new tests for the first time in May 2016.

5 New Tests The new tests consist of: English reading paper 1: Combined reading book and answer book. English reading paper 2: Reading book and answer book. Spelling test. English punctuation and grammar test. Maths paper 1: arithmetic. Maths paper 2: reasoning and problem solving. Writing will be assessed through our teacher assessment.

6 What is Teacher Assessment? Teachers constantly gather evidence from a variety of sources about pupil performance. This on-going assessment is more reliable than tests which are just a snapshot of achievement. Not all children will achieve their best in the tests and some may excel. Teacher assessment helps to create a balanced picture.

7 The tests do not have set days but schools have to administer them during May. These results will then be reported and are used to help the teacher assess the children’s work. The teacher assessment is then moderated by your local authority. Swallowfield were moderated last year in Early Years, Year 2 and Year 4 with outstanding results and good practice was taken away to share with other schools. Assessments

8 As part of the new national curriculum, levels have been abolished. This is in response to concerns about the validity and reliability of levels and sub-levels. These concerns had an impact on pupils’ learning, but also on the relationships between primary and secondary schools and the trust in their assessments. Levels have also been recognised as the driver of undue pace through the curriculum, which has led to gaps in pupils’ knowledge.

9 Key Stage 1 Outcomes At the end of Key Stage One, a child can be levelled as: 1-Working towards the expected standard (Emerging) 2-Working at the expected standard (Expected) 3-Working above the expected standard (Exceeding)

11 Maths - Paper 2 - Reasoning 5 Aural questions Independentquestions The questions will be arranged in order of difficulty. Children are supported to read the questions and given as much time as they need to answer.

14 English: grammar

15 English: spelling 20 spellings with 15 minutes to complete

16 Phonics Testing In Year 1 each child took part in the Phonics Testing. In June- There will be the retest for those who didn’t pass in Year 1. Pass score was 32 out of 40 but can change. 90% pass rate for last year.

17 Year 2 End of Key Stage 1 Results 2015 Swallowfield are significantly above the national average and have been so for many years.

18 Key Points If it is appropriate, children can have the Maths paper read to them. No help can be given with the reading or spelling tests. No child will be made to undertake test that is not accessible to them. Teacher assessments (with evidence) are more important than test results.
