Status of the AWAKE Control System Edda Gschwendtner, Janet Schmidt, Marine Gourber-Pace, Roman Gorbonosov, Peter Sherwood AWAKE Technical Board, 27 January 2016 1

Outline Overview of the CERN Control System Specifications for the AWAKE Experiment How is it done for AWAKE Responsibilities for the Experimental Part Open Issues 2

CERN Control SW Layers 3 HW Equipment Control room AWAKE tunnel

4 HW Equipment: Magnets, power converters, beam instrumentation, vacuum, RF system,… Control room AWAKE tunnel Control System Beam Lines CERN standard

Interlock System There are different interlock systems in AWAKE: three of them interlock the proton extraction from SPS 1.BIC - hardware interlock system (used for vacuum valves, plungers, laser beam dump upstream of the plasma cell) 2.WIC – warm magnet interlock system 3.SIS - software interlock system (used for example to stop the next SPS extraction if proton beam drifts to close to the laser merging mirror). 4.Local laser interlock - a software interlock (used to interlock the laser to shoot onto BI-BTV screens with full power). 5

Specifications See EDMS 1458874, previous TBs Logging: All data of the beam lines and the experiment must be stored in the CERN system. 1.CERN equipment: under responsibility of CERN, follows CERN standards  FESA classes… 2.HW equipment from the institutes and SW developed by CERN (FESA) OTR, plasma cell temperature probes…  tbc 3.HW and SW from institutes (standalone control system, but data to be logged in CERN system) Laser, plasma cell Fixed displays are required for monitoring the performance of the accelerator and the experimental equipment. – Beam line equipments follow CERN standard – Experiment equipment: want to derive data before going to FD  needs new SW Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs): – Existing GUIs for beam line equipment – Adapt existing GUIs for experiment equipment – New GUIs for experiment equipment Experiment Event: – Information relevant to an experiment prepared and collected on an ‘experiment computer’. – Institutes provide relevant parameters, event file and analysis frame. 6

Requirements The current requirements for the control system are summarized in the EDMS document https://edms.cern.ch/document/1528713/1 https://edms.cern.ch/document/1528713/1 – With: Hardware, how it will be controlled, who is responsible, which interfaces will be used, interlocks needed 7
