Texians – Anglo Texans English language communication

Mexican Texans Spanish language communication

American Government Democracy – Electing Good Leaders and Unelecting Bad Ones

Mexican Government Mexico did allow for local government and did have local elected leaders. The alcalde functioned like a sheriff, judge, and mayor. And the ayunamineto was like a town council. But early Mexico also had numerous strong leaders and dictators that curbed or cut out local government at times.

Representation in the Legislature Americans believed they did not have enough representation in the state legislature of Coahuila and Texas

American Rights and Freedoms Americans were used to a trial by a jury of their peers and other protections in the criminal justice system

Mexican Justice In Mexico, a military officer acted as a judge and decided the case. You had to prove your innocence. This was unlike the US in which the prosecution had to prove your guilt.

Law and Order – Police or the Military? Americans were used to locally elected sheriffs to keep the peace. While at times Mexico did have these local officials, it also had a history of military troops involved in resolving local disputes.

Anglo-American Religious Traditions Anglo-Americans were used to some religious freedoms and expected to be able to worship how they wanted. Most were Protestant Christians (Baptists, Methodists, Lutherans, etc.) and not Catholic Christians.

Mexican Religious Traditions Almost all Mexicans were Catholic Christian. The Mexican government expected everyone in Mexico to be Catholic and to convert if you weren’t already Catholic.

Slavery in Texas Most Anglo-Americans came from Southern states where slavery was an accepted way of life among whites. Texians believed the only way to develop agriculture in Texas was by using slaves. Mexicans, on the other hand, gradually got rid of slavery, especially after they won their independence. Mexican laborers were more like servants but not slaves.
