+ The 5 Paragraph Essay ACT Style

+ 5 Paragraph ACT Style The writing portion is back! Never a wrong point of view, it is all about how you write it and the evidence you provide. Topics are often relevant and important. (Should cell phones be allowed in schools? Should P.E. be required all four years of high school? Should service learning be a graduation requirement?) Basic format that can help you succeed! Should be able to brainstorm and write in less that 30 minutes.

+ Basic Format for 5 Paragraph Persuasive Essay Paragraph 1: Introduction Why your topic is important Thesis: What you believe Paragraph 2: #1 Reason You Are Right Topic Sentence Evidence Paragraph 3: #2 Reason You Are Right Topic Sentence Evidence Paragraph 4: Counter Claim Defense The Other Side Why it is still wrong Paragraph 5:Conclusion Restate main point Restate thesis Give the readers something to do now that they believe you

Your position. I believe that P.E. classes should be mandatory for all four years of high school. Cell phones should be allowed in the classroom. Service Learning should be a graduation requirement.

+ 3 rd Body Paragraph: Counter Claim Preparing for what the haters will say. Topic Sentence: “Some people may disagree with ______________________ and say ______________________. “ The rest of the paragraph is proving them wrong: “They are wrong because_______” Some people may disagree with the fact that it is important to remain active in school and say that students can be active outside of school. They are wrong because often times students spend time after school on homework and clubs and do not always have time to be active….”

+ 5 th Paragraph: Conclusion Restate your main points: Think topic sentences. Now that the readers believe you, what should they do? “Now that you understand the importance of P.E. class, please talk to your principal about making it a requirement.”

+ Your Essay Look over your pre-assessment. Is it perfect? Great. You have no homework. Does it need to be fixed? Due: Wednesday Should P.E. be mandatory all four years of high school?
