The Fall of Rome: A Different Point of View “The Fall of Rome” is actually an expression often misunderstood. The Roman Empire had been declining for many years. “Barbaric” tribes attempted to invade the Roman Empire, but the Empire was able to hold them off. The year 476 AD marks a turning point, because the capital was attacked and the entire Western half of the empire came under the control of the invading tribes. Even though the cities were destroyed and the once great roads of Rome laid ruin under mud and wreckage, many of the Roman traditions were preserved by the Catholic Church. Rome never actually “fell”. Instead, a long period of changes took place resulting in cultural diffusion as the invaders combined many of their traditions with Roman traditions. As far as the Eastern portion of the Empire is concerned, it lived on for another 1,000 years and was called the Byzantine Empire. When we speak of the Fall of Rome, we are speaking of a period of slow decline and change in the western half of the empire. DOCUMENT 4
