Lab What happened in the water? Why? What type of solution and transport occurred? What happened in the colored water? Why? What type of solution and transport occurred? What happened in the vinegar? Why? What type of solution and transport occurred? What happened in the corn syrup? Why? What type of solution and transport occurred?
2
Moving “things” In and Out of the Cell Actively!!
3
Proteins in the Hizouse!!
5
Active Transport Requires energy –Moving large molecules –Pumps Moving ions against their concentration gradients –Low to high Very common for Potassium (K + ) and Sodium (Na + )
6
What about the large molecules?
7
Endocytosis vs. Exocytosis Cells need a way to take in and get rid of large molecule or particles that cannot pass through the membrane Endo - Cell membrane extends out around the particle to take it in Exo – Vesicles meet the cell membrane to discharge materials; get them out
8
3 Types of Endocytosis Phagocytosis –Food Pinocytosis –Liquid Receptor-Mediated Endocytosis –Uses the Receptor Proteins Specific molecules only!
9
Endocytosis All three types form vesicles which carry the materials into the cell
10
Exocytosis Getting materials out of the cell
11
Let’s watch both processes! http://highered.mcgraw- hill.com/olc/dl/120068/bio02.swf
12
Proteins’ Jobs Carrier Proteins –Passive Transport –Move materials (glucose) with concentration gradient Pumps –Active Transport –Move ions against their concentration gradient
13
Receptor Proteins –Active Transport –Receptor-Mediated Endocytosis Marker Proteins (the one not in active or passive transport) –Help cells communicate –Recognition of cells
14
Questions to think about? 1.Explain the Fluid Mosaic Model. 2.Explain why cells are small and do not grow very large. 3.Describe the structure, orientation and function of the cell membrane. 4.Why is active transport needed? Why doesn’t passive transport get the job done?

Hello! October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Student Council would like to raise money for the Susan G Koman For The Cure Foundation. We will dedicate next week to this effort. If you pay $5 on Monday, you can wear jeans ALL week!!! That $5 goes directly to the Foundation. (Pay your money to Lyndsey Fischer or Liz Ritsema). Friday, October 30th, will be Pink Day at TKHS. Everyone will be encouraged to wear PINK! Students can pay $1 to wear a hat and that money also goes right to the Susan G Koman For The Cure Foundation. Please join this effort to raise money for such a great cause!!! Thanks for all you do!! ~TKHS Student Council
