READING A paragraph usually begins with a topic sentence. The topic sentence tells the reader what the paragraph is about. ~Do exercise 4 on page 40~

WRITING In writing, we use full stops (. ) to end sentences and commas (, ) to separate things in a list. ~ Do exercise 1 on page 42~ We can use ‘in addition’ and ‘and’ to join two similar ideas together. Example… GR101 is an interesting course, and it is also very useful. ~ Do exercises 2 + 3 on page 42~

WRITING We use pronouns (I, me, he, him, it, them, they…) to avoid repeating nouns in English. Example: Ahmad is a student in my class. Ahmad works very hard. ~ Do exercise 4 on page 43~

VOCABULARY A prefix is a group of letters placed before a word. Examples: Unhappy Impossible Refill Undo Incomplete Do you think prefixes change the meaning of a word? ~ Do exercise 2 on page 44~

READING Remember that we can use skimming and scanning to find information in a text. ~Do exercise 4 on page 58~ Writers can use personal pronouns to refer back to something they said earlier. For example… + People have busier lives these days. They are working longer hours. + It is possible to control diabetes. If you eat well, you can avoid it.

WRITING We can connect ideas together using: …on the other hand… …as a result… …also… (comes before the main verb or after verb ‘be’) 1. Ali didn’t study very well. He didn’t pass the exam. 2. Sarah eats healthy. She goes to the gym. 3. Kuwait is a very hot country. It is very humid. 4. Qatar is a rich country. Sudan isn’t as rich.
