RADIATION THERAPY JOSE MORALES EMMA GARCIA BY: DAN MARTINEZ

2 WHAT IS RADIATION? noun 1. PHYSICS the emission of energy as electromagnetic waves or as moving subatomic particles, esp. high-energy particles that cause ionization. Radiation is energy that comes from a source and travels through space and may be able to penetrate various materials.

3 Reducing radiation side effects
One way to reduce side effects is by using radio protective drugs. These are drugs that are given before radiation treatment to protect certain normal tissues in the treatment area. The one most commonly used today is Amifostine. This radio protective drug may be used in people with head and neck cancer to reduce the mouth problems caused by radiation therapy.

4 Long term side effects Common breast cancer radiation side effects may include redness, dryness or irritation of the skin in the treated area. Another common side effect is fatigue, especially in the later weeks of treatment and for some time afterward. Survivors of Hodgkin lymphoma, especially those diagnosed before 1988, often had their spleens removed and have a higher risk of serious infections. Survivors of cancers of the bone and soft tissue may experience physical and psychological effects from losing all or part of a limb, such as phantom limb pain (feeling pain in the limb that was removed). Learn more about rehabilitation, which can help people cope with physical changes from surgery. Men who had lymph nodes near the kidney, bladder, testicles, or rectum removed may have a risk of infertility (the inability to father a child).

5 What is chemotherapy? Chemotherapy, often called chemo, is the use of drugs to treat a disease. The term chemotherapy is now most often used to describe a type of cancer treatment. Chemotherapy drugs travel throughout the body and kill cancer cells wherever they are located, and it is a very effective treatment for many types of cancer. Chemotherapy drugs work to target damaged cells. Most cells in our body do not divide or make copies of themselves while they are performing their normal jobs. The cells that lead to cancer are damaged and they no longer listen to the rules of the body, and they divide in an unregulated manner. Chemotherapy drugs work by targeting these cells and eventually killing them.

6 Dose radiation hurt? No, radiation therapy does not hurt while it is being given. But the side effects that people may get from radiation therapy can cause pain or discomfort. This book has a lot of information about ways that you, your doctor, and your nurse can help manage side effects.
