4 The BIG Question: How can I identify and use adjectives?

5 A famous doctor helped Hewitt. An adjective can come before the noun it describes. The puny boy loved his parents. Oh, how they worried about this boy! Doctors made many visits to their home. Hewitt lived with his parents in an enormous house.

6 An adjective can follow a form of the verb to be, such as is or was. Dr. Gargantuan is famous for his work. Their house was marvelous for giving parties. The Andersons are excited about Hewitt’s talents. Though he was born to a family of giants, Hewitt was puny.

7 The red pencils are sharp. The young rabbit is tiny. The famous scientist was excited about his discovery. The older woman was nervous about falling.

8 Use a comma between two adjectives if you could place the word and between them. The big, lazy dog is mine. A tall, skinny boy scored 12 points in the basketball game. The Andersons held bountiful, elegant banquets at their home. A giraffe has a long, thin neck.

9 The Girl Scouts planted several beautiful flowers outside the school. Few short people play basketball well. Dr. Wengerd gave us some difficult problems to solve. Many young kids love to ask questions.
