How does California prepare for Earthquakes hazards? Objective: To find out how people can reduce and manage hazard risk by forward planning

Why does California need to prepare? USGS map of recent quakes

Preparedness now! Watch the video below to find out how populations can prepare themselves for natural hazard events.

Our Location

The Scenario You live in Pacific Heights, San Francisco. You have a small sturdy shed in your garden, well away from the house, which houses your garden tools. On the advice of local fire officers you are going to put together an earthquake emergency kit and store it in this shed so it would be accessible in the event of an earthquake.

What is this product? How does it help manage the impact of an earthquake

Competition Time You will see 30 items that could be packed into an earthquake survival kit. How many can you remember?

Ranking the most important Discuss all your items on the list decide which would be the most important for the population in California. Justify your answers Would the most important survival items be the same for someone in an LEDC?

Koso - The California Valve These valves are earthquake- sensitive gas shut-off valves. They are intended to close in the event of an earthquake to prevent gas flow into a structure where earthquake damage may have occurred. This will greatly reduce potential risk of explosion or fire due to loss of gas line integrity or uncontrolled flow of gas after a major earthquake.

Building design Watch the 2 videos and make notes on how buildings can be made earthquake proof: https://www.youtube.co m/watch?v=lI1M8o0BH Pc https://www.youtube.co m/watch?v=h3UVMHjvF Ws

Task: prepare some communication for new students and parents at the British School of San Francisco to explain how they can survive in an earthquake Success criteria: Explanation of why the need to prepare for a quake in San Francisco Before: How they can prepare themselves and their surroundings before the quake During: how should they protect themselves during the quake? After: How can they make sure themselves and area is safe after the quake?
