Math Back to School Night Room 29 Amy Kinseth

Common Core Standards-4 th grade in a nutshell Operations and Algebraic Thinking Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems. Gain familiarity with factors and multiples. Generate and analyze patterns. Number and Operations in Base Ten Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers. Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. Number and Operations--Fractions Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering. Build fractions from unit fractions by applying and extending previous understandings of operations on whole numbers. Understand decimal notation for fractions, and compare decimal fractions. Measurement and Data Solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from a larger unit to a smaller unit. Represent and interpret data Geometric measurement: understand concepts of angle and measure angles. Geometry Draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles.

Eight Mathematical Practices

Our Year-Scope and Sequence Our year will follow something like this: Unit 1: Place Value (estimated time: 3 weeks) Unit 2: Problem Solving (est.: 1 or 2 weeks) Unit 3: Addition and Subtraction (est.: 3 weeks) Unit 4: Multiplication and Division (est.: 12 weeks) Unit 5: Fractions (est.: 6 weeks) Unit 6: Decimal Fractions (est.: 4 weeks) Unit 7: Geometry (ext. 8 weeks)

Homework Included in the math packet Should reinforce concepts that we went over in class Often, a writing component Linked on the LP WebsiteLP Website Shouldn’t take more than an hour Cut if off after an hour Write a note/email

More Homework Stuff Thatquiz One quiz each night Post 2 weeks at a time If no tests are posted…. LearnZillion videos Survival Math Fun projects—real world situations 5 times/year Check the page on the LP WebsiteLP Website SignUp Genius to sign up for spots SignUp Genius

Other tabs on the LP website What my math journal should look like Pictures of neat journal notes Math Portfolios Unit tabs Includes class work and homework pages Mrs. Kinseth’s math journal Links to assist with unit RAFT books Math Vocabulary Links and Articles for Parents

Parents: Part of the Team! Keep in touch: Email Drop by the classroom Call 4 th grade voice mail Parent Pow Wow Every Monday at 3:30 and Thursday at 8:15 No need to make an appointment, but couldn’t hurt to email ahead of time Tuesday Morning Math and Muffins New this year Adult math time Answer math questions

Parent PowWow and Math and Muffins Tuesday Morning Math and Muffins When: First Tuesday of each month, 8am Where: Room 29 Who: Room 29 math parents. Adults only, please! Let’s get together on a regular basis and talk about math! We can discuss things in our math class, we’ll do math as adults, chat, and hopefully have a good time! Parent Powwow!! Come chat and hang out with Mrs. Kinseth! She will be available every Monday afternoon from 3:30-4:30pm and every Thursday morning from 8:15- 8:45am.
