Presented By: Aaron Goodwin Mike Pyrkosz April 15, 2004 Aquarium Wave Generator Project # 589-04A Design Review
2
Water movement is one of the most important requirements for coral health 90 gallon tank shown
3
Water movement is important Corals are sessile animals (attached to rocks) Moves food past them for capture Removes waste and allows respiration to occur Photosynthesis and calcification rates increase
4
Selected Design Rotational Diverting Valve Single inlet Alternating outlets Low geared motor drive Single pump allowed to run continuously
5
Design Revisions Simplify machining Reduce material cost User friendly –O-ring seal –Disassembly for cleaning Adjustable motor mounting plate
6
Design Revisions Variable speed controller – For prototype model only Ease of installation
7
Technical Analysis O-ring selection EPDM selected for saltwater Estimated flow to be 18 gpm ( 6 ft of head loss) Fittings selected and sized for reduced losses Removable submerged jet manifolds Area in = Area out
8
Test Tank 120 gallon aquarium dimensions: 23”h x 18’d x 72”lg
9
Test Tank Submerged jet manifold plumbing
10
Plumbing Schematic Pump Outlet (2 Places) Magnetic Drive Pump Diverting Valve Pump Intake
11
Test Tank Back of overflow box Blueline HD 70 pump (above)
12
Test Plan Visual flow indicators: streamers, neutrally buoyant dyes Estimate in-tank flow velocity Submerged jet manifold location Check noise level
13
Potential Problems Possible o-ring failure Gaps around cylinder at closed position Verify theoretical concept Valve body is bulky
