Cross-Cutting Fact Sheets, con’t. Developmental Disabilities Parkinson’s Disease Cancer Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Use of Special Education

Cross-cutting fact sheets: Start with “generic” NCHS overview NCHS Data on Asthma About NCHS The CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) is the nation’s principal health statistics agency, providing data to identify and address health issues. NCHS compiles statistical information to help guide public health and health policy decisions.

Cross-cutting fact sheets: Asthma Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease involving episodes or attacks of small airways narrowing from inflammation and hyperresponsiveness to asthma “triggers”. Many triggers exist, including allergens, infections, exercise, abrupt changes in the weather, or exposure to airway irritants, such as tobacco smoke. Asthma attacks can vary from mild to life-threatening, and involve shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, chest pain or tightness, or any combination of these symptoms. Present brief statement of topic

Cross-cutting fact sheets: Highlight key findings Key Findings Prevalence  In 2001, 20.3 million people (73 per 1,000) currently had asthma, of which 6.3 million were children under 18 years of age.  Current asthma prevalence was highest for non-Hispanic blacks at 83 per 1,000 population.  Among adults, asthma was higher among women, but for children, boys were more likely than girls to have asthma.

Cross-cutting fact sheets: Specify data sources

Cross-cutting fact sheets: Describe challenges and future opportunities NCHS Data on Health Insurance and Access to Care Challenges and Future Opportunities  Increase the usefulness of provider-based data to monitor and assess quality of care by providing national benchmark data for comparison with state and local performance. Data collection forms and sampling frames can be adapted to address quality of care issues and information can be linked to data on provider characteristics.

Questions for You Fact Sheets: Effective? How to improve? Additional topics? Other outreach materials & methods? Organizations we should contact?
