T ONIGHT ’ S O BJECTIVES Due this week Midterm Project Chapter 6

U NIT 5 Due by Tuesday, April 24

D UE BY T UESDAY, A PRIL 24 For Unit 5: Read Chapter 6 Answer 2 discussion questions Midterm Projects are due on Tuesday, April 24 Submit Project Team leader will submit the final version Submit Peer Review by Tuesday, April 24 Each person will submit individual peer review

U NIT 5: D ISCUSSION Q UESTIONS DQ1: Project Risk Projects pose many avenues of risk for organizations. Systems analysts are tasked with helping to mitigate that risk by providing the customer with the best options that meet their needs but do not take advantage of their lack of specialization regarding the system being implemented. Search the Internet and find a resource that describes what causes IT projects to fail and list at least one of those reasons and how the systems analyst can help mitigate that risk.

U NIT 5: D ISCUSSION Q UESTIONS DQ2: Structured versus Object Oriented Analysis What is the definition of the structured analysis as it pertains to the SDLC? What is the definition of object oriented analysis as it pertains to SDLC? Given, both of the above definitions, what are the real differences? When should each be used? Are they mutually exclusive processes or do they go hand in hand?

T EAMS : M IDTERM P ROJECT Midterm will be completed in teams. Midterm Project is due Tuesday, April 24 Midterm Project (Unit 5) Based on Willowbrook School scenario Write mission statement List 6 business processes and person responsible Develop business case for proposed TIMS system List system requirements for new TIMS system Write analysis of diagrams Create decision tree for determining discounts Peer review of all group members

B USINESS C ASE Reasons or justification for the proposed system Answer the following questions (in paragraph format) Why are we doing this project? How does this solution address the problem? How much will cost and how long will it take? What are the risks of this project? What are the risks of not doing this project? How will we measure success? What sources of funding are available for this project? Convince me the problem is real and a new system will solve that problem!

S YSTEM R EQUIREMENTS See Chapter 2 – System Requirements Checklist List at least 3-5 requirements each of the following: Output Reports, statistics, daily list, Input GUI interface, web screen, input forms, data entry forms Process Calculations, updates, steps executed Performance How many users, response time, time reports generated Control Log-on security, manage users, levels of access

P EER E VALUATION Complete Peer Evaluation for each team member.

G RADING R UBRIC FOR M IDTERM P ROJECT Total = 160 points 10 pts – Mission Statement is clear and concise 25 pts – Six Business Processes identified with owner 20 pts – Business Case justifies need for the project 25 pts – Thorough List of Requirements 40 pts – Explanation of the Context & Level 0 Diagrams 20 pts - Decision Table completed 20 pts – Peer Review (full points, if submitted) Your individual grade is based on the paper grade and on your Participation Percentage as reported by your teammates.

C HAPTER 6 Object Modeling

Q UESTIONS What is Structured Analysis & Design? What is Object Oriented Analysis & Design?

O BJECT M ODELING Based on objects Object has attributes and methods Can create instances of objects Question: If our object was a car… What would be attributes? What would be methods? What would be instances?

T YPES OF UML DIAGRAMS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unified_Modeling_Language

U NIFIED M ODELING L ANGUAGE (UML) Use Case Modeling Represents steps in a specific business function or process External entities are actors which initiate use case

U SE C ASE

U SE C ASE D IAGRAM

C LASS D IAGRAM Detailed view of a single use case

S EQUENCE D IAGRAMS

S TATE T RANSITION D IAGRAMS Shows how an object changes from one state to another, depending on events that affect the object.

A CTIVITY D IAGRAM

F INAL Q UESTION After seeing the different diagram types for UML, what advantages does UML have over structured analysis & design?

W RAPPING U P I will open the floor for questions from you. Please raise your hand // so I don't miss anyone. Remember to post early in the discussion boards. Contact me at pvanhook@gmail.com
