1
Chemistry The study of matter and how matter changes
2
Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space Mass – the amount of matter in something Volume – the amount of space something occupies Matter
3
Which of the following is matter? Air? Car? A Person?
4
Part of studying matter is describing it. When you describe matter, you explain its characteristics, or properties.
5
Try to guess what’s in the bag! I can only answer “yes” or “no” questions.
6
When you were trying to guess what was in the bag, you were thinking about the object’s properties.
7
What is a property? Property: a characteristic of a substance that can be observed
8
Two kinds of properties: Physical Properties and Chemical Properties
9
Physical Property A characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing the substance into another substance
10
What physical properties did you use when you were trying to guess the mystery item?
11
Physical Property Examples: color, odor, mass, volume, magnetism, ability to conduct electric current, strength, flexibility, texture
12
Malleability The ability of a substance to be rolled or pounded into thin sheets
13
Ductility The ability of a substance to be pulled into a wire
14
Solubility The ability of a substance to dissolve in another substance
15
State The physical form in which a substance exists, such as a solid, liquid, or gas - melting point, boiling point
16
Density The ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance Sink or float? Density = mass ÷ volume
17
Thermal Conductivity The rate at which a substance transfers heat
18
Physical Property A characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing the substance into another substance
19
Physical Change A change that alters the form or appearance of a substance that does not change the substance into another substance –Nothing new or different is formed
20
Physical changes do not form new substances.
21
Examples of Physical Changes Boiling Freezing Dissolving Breaking Making a mixture - 2 or more types of matter (substances) mixed together –Can be separated physically All phase changes are physical changes!
22
Exit Slip 1. You are given a gallon of water. Name two things you could do to the water that would result in a physical change. 2. You are given a piece of paper. Name two things you could do to the paper that would result in a physical change. 3. Henry takes a cup of water and places it in the freezer. The liquid water changes to ice. Henry thinks this change is not a physical change, because the water changed into ice. Do you agree or disagree? Why?
