Writing 1 and 2—February 17, 2016 Journal: Cultural sensitivity is being aware that cultural differences and similarities between people exist without assigning them a value – positive or negative, better or worse, right or wrong. When have you been treated with insensitivity because of a cultural difference? Remember that there are many types of cultural groups—racial, ethnic, women, men, teens, adults, elderly, children, parents, single, married, single parent, etc. – Example: The media was culturally insensitive to Roberto Clemente by printing his quotes in broken English. – Example: My professor in college told me that I wouldn’t be able to have my son and pass his class. He told me that I would probably drop out and wouldn’t graduate considering I was a single mother.

2. Clemente’s Treatment Events (Situation/What Happened) Antagonist(s) and Possible Rationale Clemente’s Reaction/Response When drafted to the Dodgers, payed much less than white players. Team owners/major league baseball as a whole; possibly just contributing to the many injustices minorities faced at that time. Accepted the pay and played well, eventually using much of his salary to fund humanitarian efforts for those who “really had to struggle” similar to how he grew up in Puerto Rico. Had to deal with segregation laws in Florida during his first year of spring training. Segregationists denying minorities equal access/treatment. Clemente put up with the Jim Crow laws, finding hotels for himself that would allow blacks and often eating meals on the bus. Although the discrimination was something new to him as Puerto Rico featured a climate of tolerance, he did not react in a manner to harm himself or his career. Discriminated against in Pittsburg.As a Pirate, Clemente was not embraced by working class white Pittsburg fans (racial discrimination) and blacks living in Pittsburg dismissed Clemente because of where he grew up. Further, newspapers frequently quoted him in broken English, highlighting his native tongue. Clemente persevered, playing well enough to win over fans of all races, and worked to become a leader for the many Latino baseball players soon to join him in the big league.

Mini-Essay Outline Introduction: Both Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente paved the way for both Blacks and Latinos to be accepted not just in the sports industry, but in other aspects of life as well.
