2 Key characteristics of the research priority on sustainable land management  Research policy context: 1.High-tech Strategy of the German Government 2.High-Tech Strategy on Climate protection 3.German Masterplan for Environmental technologies 4.New framework programme: Research for sustainability (2009- 2016)  Modular approach (“learning program”)  Focus: 1.Inter- and trans-disciplinary research 2.Applied research (international & national) 3.Regional approach  Start: 2009 (5 years, 100 mio€)

3 BMBF research priority Sustainable Land Management Main Objective  To elaborate and develop the necessary knowledge base for a sustainable land use management, including strategies, technologies and system solutions Modular approach: Modul A :"Interaction between land management, climate change and ecosystem services“ Modul B: "Innovative system solutions for sustainable land management" Modul XYZ: “to be developed in coming years”

4 Coordination/Management Project to guarantee interaction between projects and A1 and A2 and synthesis C Module A: Interaction between land management, climate change and ecosystem services Objectives: To broadened comprehension of interactions of land management, mitigation approaches and ESF/ESS To design and test concrete options for action through the integrative evaluation of different strategies of land management. To develop methods and instruments for sustainable land management in the socio-economic context. Target Regions: „Hot Spots of Global Change“

5 BMBF Research Funding Measure Sustainable Land Management Module A1: Interaction between land management and climate change Key topics Possible contribution of land management strategies to greenhouse gas reduction goals Adaptation of land management to climate change Possibility of influencing greenhouse gas emissions by means of specific cultivation systems and management options Trade-offs between carbon-optimized land management and other societal demands General socio-economic conditions and consequences of the integration of climate protection goals in land use decisions Note: All topics must be considered

6 Module A1: Main research questions: Can the carbon and greenhouse gas pools in soils and plants be preserved or even increased by adapting land management practices? How, to what extent and in which timespans can this be done in particularly relevant regions? What impact does climate change itself have on this mitigation potential? To what extent does potential GHG optimization of land management compete with other societal demands on land use? What kind of enabeling conditions must be fulfilled to ensure that the proposed solutions can be effectively realized (capacities, basic requirements), and what tools are needed for evaluation and implementation?  DLR-Oberpfaffehofen 2003

7 BMBF Research Funding Measure Sustainable Land Management Key topics Development of robust methods for the analysis and evaluation of ecosystem functions and services and for determining the resilience of the given ecosystems Studies to quantify the dependence of ecosystem functions and services on biodiversity, climate change and land management. Analysis of cumulative effects in terms of space and time and recording of transregional secondary and substitution effects Trade-offs and synergies between land management that takes special account of ESF/ESS and other goals of land use Development of socio-economic tools for consideration of ESF/ESS in land management Module A2 Interaction between land management and ecosystem functions/services

8 BMBF Research Funding Measure Sustainable Land Management Module A2 Key research questions How can data about ESF/ESS be collected at regional level and how can their different features be analysed? What interactions and feedback can be found between different ecosystem services and with major land use systems? What trade-offs and synergies can be found for ESF/ESS between different space and time scales? Which monetary and non-monetary assessment methods are suited for the quantification of ESF/ESS so that their use in market mechanisms is possible? What socio-economic conditions must be fulfilled and/or what mechanisms/tools must be available to enable ESF/ESS to be considered in land use decisions?

9 Module A1 - Interaction between Land Management and Climate Change Module A2 - Interaction between Land Management and Ecosystem Functions/Services Incoming proposals (75)

10 Current Status 1.2-phase evaluation process (preliminary proposal + full proposal) 2.Roughly 200 incoming proposals from all around the world for both modules (Modul A: 75; Modul B: 125) 3.International review process with more than 120 reviewers (Modul A) 4.Contact with host countries and joint selection (Co-funding mandatory in BRICS countries). 5.Final selection in 01/2010 6.First projects will start mid 2010
