Short Course Planning January 3 rd 2016 Dr. Alex Selvarathinam alex.selvarathinam@lmco.com

OBJECTIVES Inform TC about  Benefits of developing and delivering Professional Development courses  Current status –AIAA short course –Notes from Short Course Ad Hoc Group Meeting (12/8/15)  Future plans –TC Survey –Course development model

BENEFITS TO STRUCTURES TC The course instructor is paid $1500/day in honoraria for courses that requires registration fees. This honoraria can be shared with other instructors if there is more than one or can be donated to the TC that supports the course. For distance learning courses - $250/student. TCs that support the course are listed on the website and can receive the honoraria 3

Background AIAA Continuing Education offerings  Courses –Courses at conferences –Onsite (at facility) –Home study –Webinars (Not currently offered)  TC-organized workshops Continuing Education oversight  Career and Professional Development Committee –Formed in January 2015 from the merger of the Career and Workforce Development Committee and Professional Member Education Committee –Offerings heavily supported by Technical Committees 4 Megan Scheidt, Managing Director, Products and Programs

Successes TC-organized workshops  Generally well attended (40+ attendees)  TCs are very engaged in the development and organization of workshops –Many are defined series  Workshop pricing model –Can register a la carte either in addition to forum registration or just workshop –Standardize pricing structure and package to ensure consistency between workshops –$10/registrant “levy” goes to organizing TC as revenue 5 Megan Scheidt, Managing Director, Products and Programs

Challenges Courses  Number of onsite courses declining –High margin product for AIAA –More organizations handling training internally or training budgets cut –Number of inquiries about onsite course increasing recently so there is possibility of increase in this offering  Home study courses holding steady –Offer 3-4 courses per year; same courses offered each year –Courses attract 5-10 registrants per course –Provides a distance learning option for those who can’t travel 6 Megan Scheidt, Managing Director, Products and Programs This is not online!

Challenges (continued) Courses  Webinars not currently offered –Experimented by webinars in 2012 with limited success –Webinars are being considered as part of Virtual Presentation Portal –Need to assess content, competition, pricing, audience, marketing, delivery, etc. before re-launching webinars  Courses at conferences continuing to struggle –Limiting the number of courses offered at forums –Seeing slight uptick in number of students per course in 2015 –Need to understand what is driving current state: content, pricing, schedule, marketing, etc. 7 Megan Scheidt, Managing Director, Products and Programs

Brainstorming Session Short Course Brainstorming Session at AIAA SciTech AIAA has offered professional development short courses at its events for a number of years as part of its Continuing Education program. Many of these courses are developed by experts within the Technical Committees and are a primary activity for the committees. Over the last few years, attendance at some courses has been declining due to a number of factors including costs, time out of the office, government travel restrictions, and reductions in organizations’ training budgets. The two AIAA Standing Committees involved with short courses—the Career and Professional Development Committee and the Technical Activities Committee—are working together to assess this Continuing Education offering to determine if changes need to be made to what AIAA offer and how. To collect feedback from Technical Committees and other interested groups, there will be a Short Course Brainstorming Session held during the upcoming AIAA Science and Technology Forum and Exposition (AIAA SciTech). Please join us to share your ideas about course content, delivery, audience, market, and competition. The session is being held: Wednesday, 6 January 2016 1700-1800 hrs Torrey Hills AB, Manchester Grand Hyatt 10

Future Plans 11

List of Courses Ranked by Structures TC The top three highly ranked courses are numbered 12 1 2 3

BREAK UP OF TC MEMBERS INTERESTED IN DEVELOPING/REVIEWING/TEACHING COURSE CONTENT 13 TC MEMBERS INTERESTED IN COURSE DEVELOPMENT = 25

14

WHAT DIFFERENTIATES US? Plenty of courses available – e.g. SAE, Universities, Coursera, etc. Contents in text books, standards, research articles, etc. What differentiates AIAA STC?  Knowledge resident in representatives from Academia, Government, Industries, and Research Institutes. 15

WHAT DIFFERENTIATES US? What others don’t have?  “practical” aspects of the subject (this is a suggestion)  E.g. “Practical Series” a bridge between academia and industry. Practical Mechanics of Composite, Practical Structural Computational Methods etc. 16 INDUSTRY GOVERNMENT ACADEMIA RESEARCH STC

PROCESS 17 DEVELOP COURSE CONTENT AIAA “PRACTICAL” STRUCTURES SERIES HANDBOOK REVIEW COURSE CONTENT AIAA “PRACTICAL” STRUCTURES SERIES TRAINING CHARTS INSTRUCTOR(S) TEACHES COURSE CONTENT Can we offer certificate courses with option to audit a teaser? Ideally at least one rep. from A, G, I, and R in reviewer and content development group

PROCESS Process should include well documented version control (change management) of course content. Process requires good on-line storage and sharing capability Publish process to customers to emphasize “courses created, maintained, and vetted by AIAA SME’s” 18
