2 TYPES OF EDUATION Secondary  Health occupations education (HOE) Post-secondary  Associate’s degree  Bachelor’s degree  Master’s degree  Doctorate or doctoral degree

3 SECONDARY EDUCATION High school courses Should include sciences, social studies, English, and mathematics Computer and accounting skills are also used in many health occupations

4 HEALTH OCCUPATIONS EDUCATION Offered at the high school level Can prepare a student for immediate employment in many health careers or for additional education after graduation Our Allied Health classes

5 POST SECONDARY EDUCATION After high school Can include training in a career-technical school, community college, or university

6 ASSOCIATE’S DEGREE Awarded by a technical school or a community college after completion of a prescribed two-year course of study

7 BACHELOR’S DEGREE Awarded by a college or university after a prescribed course of study that usually lasts four or more years

8 MASTER’S DEGREE Awarded by a college or university after completion of one or more years of work beyond a bachelor’s degree

9 DOCTORATE OR DOCTORAL DEGREE Awarded by a college or university after completion of two or more years of work beyond a bachelor’s or master’s degree Some doctorates can require four to six years of additional study

10 CERTIFICATION, REGISTRATION, AND LICENSURE Methods used to ensure the skill and competency of health care personnel and to protect the consumer or patient

11 CERTIFICATION Means that a person has fulfilled requirements of education and performance and meets the standards and qualifications established by the professional association or government agency that regulates a particular career A certificate or statement is issued by the association Examples: certified dental assistant, certified laboratory technician, and certified medical assistant

12 REGISTRATION Granted by a regulatory body (professional association or state board) that administers examinations and maintains a current list of qualified personnel in a given health car area. Examples: registered dietitian, registered respiratory therapist, and registered radiologic technologist

13 LICENSURE A government agency authorizes individuals to work in a given occupation Health occupations requiring licensure can vary from state to state Obtaining and retaining licensure usually require that a person complete an approved educational program, pass a state board test, and maintain certain standards Examples: physician, dentist, physical therapist, registered nurse, and licensed practical/vocational nurse

14 ACCREDITATION For most health careers, graduation from an accredited program is required before certification, registration, and/or licensure will be granted Ensures that the program of study meets the established standards and prepares students for employment in the health career Make sure that school offers accredited programs of study before enrolling

15 TWO MAJOR ACCREDITING AGENCIES For health care programs Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) A student can contact these agencies to determine whether a health occupations program at a specific school is accredited

16 CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS CEUs Required to renew licenses or maintain certification or registration in many states Individual must obtain additional hours of education in the specific health career area during a specified period of time Health care workers should be aware of the state requirements regarding CEUs for their given careers

17 EDUCATION LEVELS, TRENDS, AND OPPORTUNITIES Training for most health occupations can be categorized into four levels:  Professional  Technologist or therapist  Technician  Aide or assistant

18 PROFESSIONAL Four or more years of college with bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree Medical doctor Dentist Nurse

19 TECHNOLOGIST OR THERAPIST Three to four years of college plus work experience, usually bachelor’s degree and, at times, a master’s degree Medical laboratory technologist Physical Therapist Speech Therapist Respiratory Therapist

20 TECHNICIAN Two-year associate’s degree, special health occupations education, or three to four years of on-the-job training Dental laboratory technician Medical laboratory technician Surgical technician

21 AIDE OR ASSISTANT Specific number of hours of specialized education or one or more years of training combining classroom and/or on-the-job training Dental assistant Medical assistant Nurse assistant

22 MULTICOMPETENT OR MULTISKILLED WORKER New trend in health occupations Good for smaller facilities and rural areas Workers are hired who can perform a variety of health care skills Worker trained in one field or occupation receive additional education to work in a second and even third occupation Educational programs have been established to prepare mulitcompetent workers

23 ENTREPRENEUR Another opportunity available in many health occupations An individual who organizes, manages, and assumes the risk of a business Can be independent or a group of cooperating individuals Involves many risks and require a certain level of education and ability Need to be well motivated, self-confident, responsible, creative, and independent

24 NATIONAL HEALTH CARE SKILL STANDARDS NHCSS Developed to indicate the knowledge and skills that are expected of health care workers Six groups:  Health Care Core Standards  Therapeutic/Diagnostic Core Standards  Therapeutic Cluster Standards  Diagnostic Cluster Standards  Information Services Cluster Standards  Environmental Services Cluster Standards

25 HEALTH CARE CORE STANDARDS Specify the knowledge and skills that the vast majority of health care workers should have Discusses an academic foundation, communication skills, employability skills, legal responsibilities, ethics, safety practices, teamwork, and knowledge about the systems in the health care environment

26 THERAPEUTIC/DIAGNOSTIC CORE STANDARDS Specify the knowledge and skills required to focus on direct client care in both the therapeutic (treatment) and diagnostic (determining the cause of disease or illness) occupations Includes health maintenance practices, client interaction, intrateam communication, monitoring client status, and client movement

27 THERAPEUTIC CLUSTER STANDARDS Specify the knowledge and skills required of workers in health occupations that are involved in changing the health status of the client over time Includes data collection, treatment planning, implementing procedures, and client status evaluation

28 DIAGNOSTIC CLUSTER STANDARDS Specify the knowledge and skills required of workers in health occupations that are involved in creating a picture of the health status of the client at a single point in time Includes planning, preparation, procedure, evaluation, and reporting

29 INFORMATION SERVICES CLUSTER STANDARDS Specify that knowledge and skills required of workers in health occupations that are involved with the documentation of client care Includes analysis, abstracting and coding, information systems, documentation, and operations to enter, retrieve, and maintain information

30 ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES CLUSTER STANDARDS Specify the knowledge and skills required of workers in health occupations that are involved with creating a therapeutic environment to provide direct or indirect client care Includes environmental observations, aseptic procedures, resource, management, and aesthetics
