They fought against Germany and Italy in Europe, the Mediterranean and North Africa, as well as against Japan in south-east Asia and other parts of the Pacific. The Australian mainland came under attack for the first time, as Japanese aircraft bombed towns in north-west Australia and Japanese midget submarines attacked Sydney harbour. World war2 was also a significant event in Australia's history because before it Australia was separate countries and because it gave women jobs and more credit

The British and France joined the war after Poland was invaded in 1939.
