It can be as a consequence of both insufficient food (undernourishment) and excessive consumption (overnourishment). The greatest contrast in the world Approximately 17% of the population of countries with low per capita incoms suffers from undernourishment. Undernourishment causes rickets, blindness and anaemia due to the lack of iron. Each year, up to half a million children go blind because their diets lack vitamin A, and around three hundred and fifty million have anaemia due to a lack of iron.
