Plat et al. 20002 Objective To evaluate whether the serum LDL cholesterol-lowering efficacy of plant stanol ester depends on the consumption frequency

Plat et al. 20003 Methods Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study N=39, normal or mildly hypercholesterolemic (TC <6.5 mmol/L) m&f Three experimental periods in random order control for 4 weeks 2.5 g/d plant stanols consumed with breakfast, lunch and dinner 2.5 g/d plant stanols consumed with lunch Test products: plant stanol ester in spreads and cookies and cakes produced from shortening containing plant stanol ester

Plat et al. 200044 The efficacy of plant stanol ester is not dependent on consumption frequency * PLANT STANOL ESTER IS AS EFFECTIVE IF DIVIDED OVER SEVERAL MEALS OR TAKEN ONCE A DAY Control period Plant stanol ester spread (2,5 g/d plant stanol) 1 X Day Plant stanol ester spread (2,5 g/d plant stanol) 3 X Day *p<0.001 compared with the control period LDL-cholesterol (mmol/l) ** Plant stanol ester three times a day: TC -6,6 %, LDL-C -10,4 % Plant stanol ester once a day: TC -6,3 %, LDL-C -9,4 %

Plat et al. 20005 Conclusions The serum LDL cholesterol-lowering effect of plant stanol ester is not dependent on the consumption frequency. It is not necessary to consume plant stanol ester simultaneously with dietary cholesterol or every time you have a meal in order to have the cholesterol lowering effect. Once a day yoghurt drink concept is based on this scientific evidence.
