Indian River Central School District Report Card for Grades 4-5 Aligned with the Common Core State Standards
2
Report Card Changes: Content and terminology closely reflects and is aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Maintains concepts of Balanced Literacy. Aligns mathematics’ skills with content of math modules.
3
Before: Effort Skills O=Outstanding 4=Highly developed at this time S=Satisfactory 3=Progressing Satisfactorily I=Improving 2=Developing N=Needs to Improve 1=Experiencing difficulty N/A= Not Applicable Achievement A+ 95-100%A 90-94% B+ 85-89%B 80-84% C+ 75-79%C 70-74% D 65-69% Below 65% Not meeting grade level INC Incomplete * Indicates below 50%
4
After: Achievement grades will still be given in math, social studies, and science. Performance Levels 4 = Exceeds Grade Level Expectations 3 = Meeting Grade Level Expectations 2 = Working Toward Grade Level Expectations 1 = Not Meeting Grade Level Expectations X = Not Yet Assessed Effort Levels E= Demonstrates Excellent Effort G= Demonstrates Good Effort I= Demonstrates Inconsistent Effort M= Demonstrates Improved Effort N= Needs to Improve Effort Reading and Writing will be assessed using:
5
ELA Reading/Writing Assessment Key Before: Students’ academic performances were assessed with reference to expectations at their guided reading level. Academic Skills 4 Highly developed at this time 3 Progressing satisfactorily 2 Developing 1 Experiencing difficulty Effort / Social and Work Habits O Outstanding S Satisfactory I Improving N Needs improvement
6
ELA Reading/Writing Math Assessment Key Now: Students’ academic performances are assessed with reference to GRADE level expectations: O 1) A plus (+) sign indicates growth toward meeting the next performance level. 2 ) Provides more accurate information about students’ achievement level because it tells where they are, with reference to where they should be. Performance Levels 4 = Exceeding Standards 3 = Meeting Standards 2 = Working Toward Standards 1 = Performing Below Standards
7
Reading Grading ELA – Reading Fiction and Informational Weeks 10203040 Guided Reading Level MNPQ Guided Reading Effort SEEE ELA Common Core Standards Assessed at Grade Level (Performance) Demonstrates comprehension of text by referring to key details and examples from the text 222+ Determines main idea(s) supported by key details from the text 1222 Understands non-fiction text based on key details from the text 222+ Reads accurately with fluency and expression 22+ 3 Applies a variety of reading strategies 2223 Performance Levels 4 = Exceeding Standards 3 = Meeting Standards 2 = Working Toward Standards 1 = Performing Below Standards
8
Writing Grades ELA – Writing Narrative, Opinion, Informational Weeks 10203040 Effort GEEE ELA Common Core Standards Assessed at Grade Level (Performance) Writes clearly to support topics using specific ideas and information 2233 Develops and organizes topics using details for support (introduction, details, conclusion) 2233 Uses grammar, sentence structure and punctuation correctly 2+ 33 Word study (spelling and vocabulary) 2323 Performance Levels 4 = Exceeding Standards 3 = Meeting Standards 2 = Working Toward Standards 1 = Performing Below Standards
9
Math Grading Mathematics Weeks 10203040 Achievement6575 80 EffortMIGG Mathematics Common Core Standards Assessed at Grade Level Exhibits fluency with basic facts and performs calculations with accuracy 122+3 Demonstrates understanding of grade-level concepts and ideas 22+33 Applies a variety of strategies to solve problems 122+3 Communicates mathematical thinking using specific vocabulary 11+22 Performance Levels 4 = Exceeding Standards 3 = Meeting Standards 2 = Working Toward Standards 1 = Performing Below Standards
10
“Exhibits fluency with basic facts and performs calculations with accuracy” Knows basic +/- facts within 20, < 3 seconds per fact Knows basic ×/÷ facts within 100, < 3 seconds per fact Uses standard algorithms for +/- multi-digit numbers Can multiply* and divide accurately and quickly (different strategies okay, see note below) Can perform grade-level fraction operations quickly and accurately Can round to nearest ___ place value 5 th : Can perform grade-level decimal operations *must be able to multiply with standard algorithm in 5 th grade
11
“Demonstrates understanding of grade-level concepts and ideas” Tied to content Not just “how”, but “why” Base-ten system – place value Fractions – diagrams & number line Geometry classification, not just identification
12
“Applies a variety of strategies to solve problems” Tape diagrams/ bar models Place value charts Number bonds Number lines (vertical & horizontal) Writes equations to model situations Different strategies for multiplication & division (partial sum/quotient, area model) “Mental math” Recognizes there may be more than one “right way” to solve a problem Chooses efficient strategies Can self-correct if a selected strategy is not working
13
“Communicates mathematical thinking using specific vocabulary” Can explain concepts using mathematical vocabulary Uses specific math terms accurately and in context Can explain thought process for solving a specific problem verbally Can explain thought process for solving a specific problem in writing using diagrams, calculations, equations and written sentences Discusses concepts and solving strategies with peers – respectfully and accurately
14
UPDATES: Behavior Behavior section divided into 1) “Behaviors That Contribute to Learning” and 2) “Social Behaviors”. This will help clarify the implications of particular behaviors and assist in communicating them to parents.
15
Learning & Social Behaviors Weeks 10203040 Participates in class discussions and activities Listens attentively Is organized Returns completed homework on time Uses independent time wisely Effort Levels EDemonstrates Excellent Effort GDemonstrates Good Effort IDemonstrates Inconsistent Effort MDemonstrates Improved Effort NNeeds to Improve Effort Learning Behaviors
16
Social Behaviors Accepts responsibility for own actions Follows directions, school and classroom rules Exercises self-control Exhibits effective problem-solving skills Demonstrates respect toward others Effort Levels EDemonstrates Excellent Effort GDemonstrates Good Effort IDemonstrates Inconsistent Effort MDemonstrates Improved Effort NNeeds to Improve Effort
