Papel Picado (punched or perforated paper)

Found throughout Mexico and former colonies of Spain. Cut tissue paper used to decorate for most every celebration: baptisms, weddings, funerals, and national holidays like the Day of the Dead, Christmas and Independence Day.

The materials used are ephemeral (which means they will fade, dissolve and disappear if left out in the sun, wind and rain). Why do you think these type of materials are used? Why not make them to last?

OBJECTIVES Create a design in your sketchbook It MUST have a Border, Background & Subject It can be EITHER symmetrical OR asymmetrical Draw your final design FULL SIZE on copy paper Transfer drawing to construction paper Cut out NEGATIVE space (POSITIVE space MUST ALL CONNECT!) Attach sheet of contrasting tissue paper
