From Marilyn Burns 1. Multiplication is the same as repeated addition when you add the same number again and again. 6 x 3 6 x ⅓
3
2. Times means “groups of.” 6 times 3 means 6 “groups of” 3 6 times ⅓ means 6 “groups of” ⅓
4
A multiplication problem can be shown as a rectangle. 3 3
5
3 groups of ⅓ ⅓ ⅓ ⅓

4. You can reverse the order of the factors and the product stays the same. 3 x 4 = 12 4 x 3 = 12 3 x ¼ = ¾ ¼ x 3 = ¾
7
5. You can break numbers apart to make multiplying easier. 3 x 6 could be (3 x 3) + (3 x 3) ⅓ x 6 could be (⅓ x 3) + (⅓ x 3)
8
6. When you multiply two numbers, the product is larger than the factors unless one of the factors is zero or one. 6 x 4 = 24 6 x ¼ =
