Language Studies and Academics Cite (verb) / Citation (noun) To Cite: to give detailed information about an information source. Citation: the information that identifies an information source. Examples of use: Fatima cites her research sources. Her in-text citations and the citations in her List of References follow APA rules.

Language Studies and Academics In-text Citation Directly follows author’s name when it is given in the body of a report OR When author’s name is not given nearby, the citation follows a quote from another document or a paraphrase Insert the citation between parentheses

Language Studies and Academics Reference List (noun) A list of citations placed at the end of a document that is used to locate and retrieve any sources that the author used in producing the document.

Language Studies and Academics Reference List Citations There should be a corresponding entry for every in-text citation Publications that offered useful background information, but which did not need to be cited in the text, may be included (sometimes these are listed separately and identified as supplementary reading) Entries are listed in alphabetical order by author’s last name (or by first word of the title when the author is not known) If two books have the same author, order the works by their date {eg. 1996 before 2008 } Entries should have a hanging indent—first line begins at left margin; following lines are all indented 0.33 inches
