3
What is Information Technology?
4
When computer and communications technologies are combined the result is information technology or “infotech.”
5
So,.... Information Technology (IT) is a general term that describes any technology that helps to produce, manipulate, store, communicate, and/or disseminate information.
6
So,.... Information Technology (IT) is the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware. (Information Technology Association of America (ITAA))
7
Computer Technology & Communication Technology ▪Computer Technology A computer is a programmable, multiuse machine that accepts data—raw facts and figures—and processes, or manipulates, it into information we can use, such as summaries, totals, or reports. Its purpose is to speed up problem solving and increase productivity. ▪Communication Technology also called telecommunications technology, consists of electromagnetic devices and systems for communicating over long distances. The principal examples are telephone, radio, broadcast television, and cable TV.
8
The addition of communication among computers—which is what happens when people “go online” on the internet.
9
The Era of Information Technology Premechanical Mechanical Electromechanical Electronic 3000 B.C. Now
10
History Of Information Technology 1.Premechanical (3000 B.C. – 1450 A.D.) When humans first started communicating they would try to use language or simple picture drawings known as petroglyths which were usually carved in rock.
11
History Of Information Technology 2.Mechanical (1450 -1840) Technologies like the slide rule (an analog computer used for multiplying and dividing) were invented. Blaise Pascal invented the Pascaline which was a very popular mechanical computer. Charles Babbage developed the difference engine which tabulated polynomial equations using the method of finite differences.
12
History Of Information Technology 3.Electromechani cal (1840 – 1940) These are the beginnings of telecommunication. The first large-scale automatic digital computer in the United States was the Mark 1 created by Harvard University around 1940.
13
History Of Information Technology 4.Electronic (1940 – Now) There are 4 main sections of digital computing. 1.The era of vacuum tubes, punch cards and rotating magnetic drums 2.The era of transistors, magnetic tape and magnetic cores 3.The era of integrated circuits (ICs) 4.The era of CPUs (Central Processing Units) which contained memory, logic, and control circuits all on a single chip

20
Competency in IT ▪ Feel comfortable using and operating a computer system ▪ Be able to make the computer work for you ▪ Be able to interact with the computer ▪ Be comfortable in cyberspace ▪ Understand the impact of computer on society, now and in the future ▪ Be an intelligent consumer of computer hardware and software ▪ Be conversant in the language of computer and information technology
21
Advantages and Disadvantages of IT Advantages ▪ Globalization ▪ Communication ▪ Cost effectiveness ▪ Bridging the cultural gap ▪ More time ▪ Creation of new jobs Disadvantages ▪ Unemployment ▪ Privacy ▪ Lack of job security ▪ Dominant culture
