born April 5, 1588; In Malmesbury, Wiltshire. raised by his wealthy uncle. 1603- he attended Magdalen Hall, Oxford where he studied scholastic philosophy. tutored the son of William Cavendish, and spent most of his life working for the Cavendish family. 1640- fled New England in fear of being persecuted for what he wrote.
