Recall from our previous unit- what hardships did the Virginia colonies face? (Turn and talk) After its difficult beginnings, Virginia began to grow, and with its growth the demand for workers was high.

A warm climate, long growing season, and rich soil spurred the growth of large scale agriculture in the southern colonies. It took a great deal of labor to plant, tend, and harvest the tobacco crop on which the colony depended. infer where you think they began to bring in laborers from. (turn and talk with your neighbors)

The first group of 20 enslaved Africans arrived in 1619 aboard a Dutch trading vessel- and many more followed in years to come. England also shipped prisoners of war and criminals, and they could earn their release after working for a period of time. Indentured Servants- look in your textbook to identify the term.

How do you feel about this system of slave trading and indentured servitude, was this fair?

Independent Practice You will be given a graph (Page 74) that highlights the number of slaves in the Southern Colonies versus the Northern Colonies between 1650 and 1710. Students will answer the following questions: 1. In about what year did the South begin relying on slavery in a much larger way then the north? 2. Why do you think the Southern colonies had more slaves than the Northern Colonies?

Group Work Use your ipad and textbook to compare and contrast indentured servants to enslaved Africans. After you complete the exercise, we will work together as a class to create a list of the similarities and differences.
