Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics University of Maryland
2
Context Faculty teaching team with research and teaching expertise in Host Pathogen Interactions (HPI) We hypothesized that scientific research could be used as the basis for active learning activities That by participation in Research Oriented Learning Activities (ROLA) students would make gains in research oriented learning and understanding of HPI concepts. Developed Research Oriented Learning Activities (ROLA) based on faculty research in the department
3
Learning goals for design of HPI Research-oriented activities Addressing questions/problems relevant to HPI faculty research Learning skills important to scientists such as o Critical thinking and research skills (including data analysis and presentation) o Use of protocols, equipment, technology o Communication/Presentation skills o Ability to work collaboratively/ ability to lead/manage o Information literacy Tasks that require mindful learning of concepts (and transfer of learning to new situations to encourage meaningful understanding Understanding of one or more of the HPI Concepts Understanding the process and the relevance of science The Process of Science
4
What is the impact of Research Oriented Learning Activities (ROLA) on students ability to analyze data?
5
Research Design Administer pre-test at beginning of the course HPI concept inventory Data analysis (to be developed) Students complete 3 ROLA activities throughout the semester Administer post-test HPI concept inventory Data analysis (to be developed)
