Lesson Menu Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 8–3) Main Idea Example 1:Write a Mixed Number as an Improper Fraction Example 2:Rename a Mixed Number

Main Idea/Vocabulary I will write mixed numbers as improper fractions.

Example 1 Write a Mixed Number as an Improper Fraction The average rainfall in Austin, Texas for the month of June is 3 inches. Write 3 inches as an improper fraction. 1 2 1 2 Step 1 To find how many halves are in 3, multiply the whole number, 3, by the denominator, 2. 3 × 2 = 6

Example 1 Write a Mixed Number as an Improper Fraction 2 Step 2 There is one more half. Add the numerator. (3 × 2) + 1 = 7 Step 3 Write the sum over the original denominator, 2. (3 × 2) + 1 = 7 2 Answer: So, 3 inches = inches. 1 2 7 2

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 1 C. 4 1 D. 7 3 B. 8 3 A. 13 3 Write 4 as an improper fraction. 1 3

Example 2 Rename a Mixed Number Write 6 as an improper fraction. 1 5 Step 1 Multiply the whole number by the denominator. 6 × 5 = 30 Step 2 Add the numerator.(6 × 5) + 1 = 31 Step 3 Write the sum over the original denominator. (6 × 5) + 1 = 31 55 Answer: So, 6 =. 31 5 1 5

Example 2 You can check the reasonableness of this answer by using models. Rename a Mixed Number

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 2 A. 37 5 C. 7 3 B. 14 5 D. 25 7 Write 7 as an improper fraction. 2 5
