Female and Male Reproductive Systems
2
Reproductive System: Organs that make possible the production of offspring.

Female Reproductive System
8
Female Reproductive System: Words to be familiar with ESTROGENFemale hormone OVUMFemale sex cell that is released from the ovaries during ovulation. OVULATIONThe release of one mature egg cell each month. FERTILIZATIONOccurs when a male’s sperm cell joins with a female’s egg cell. IMPLANTATIONWhen a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine wall at the start pregnancy. MENSTRUATIONUterine lining, the unfertilized egg, and some blood flow out of the body.
9
Functions of the Female Reproductive System: Produces estrogen. Produces, stores, and transports ova. Provides a place for fertilization to occur. Protects and nourishes the fertilized egg as it grows and matures into a human being.
10
Ovary: *Female glands that produce and store ovum and produce and secrete female hormones. Ovary
11
Fallopian Tubes: *Tubes that transport the egg from the ovary to the uterus. Fertilization occurs here. Ovary Fallopian Tube
12
Uterus: *Where the fetus is nourished prior to birth. Ovary Fallopian Tube Uterus
13
Uterine Lining: *The inner layer of the uterus. Implantation occurs here. If there is no implantation, the lining is shed through menstruation. Ovary Fallopian Tube Uterus Uterine Lining
14
Cervix: *The bottom of the uterus that opens into the vaginal canal. Allows the passage of menstrual fluid. Protects reproductive system and developing fetus from pathogens. Ovary Fallopian Tube Uterus Uterine Lining Cervix
15
Vagina: *The birth canal. It leads from the uterus to the outside of the body. Ovary Fallopian Tube Uterus Uterine Lining Cervix Vagina
16
1.Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS): a collection of physical and emotional changes before and during menstruation 2.Toxic Shock Syndrome: rare but serious bacterial infection associated with incorrect tampon use. May produce a fever and a sun-burn like rash, requires immediate medical care 3.Infertility: the inability to reproduce. It may be due to blocked fallopian tubes or failure to produce eggs. 4.Ovarian Cysts: Fluid filled sac on the ovary. 5.Cancer : uncontrolled cell growth that destroys healthy tissue. (BREASTS, OVARIES, UTERUS, CERVIX) Problems of the Female Reproductive System:
17
How to take care of the Female Reproductive System: 1.Get regular checkups by a physician. 2.Bathe regularly. 3.During menstruation (period) change tampons and sanitary pads frequently. 4.Practice sexual abstinence before marriage 5.Monthly breast self-exam
18
Breast Self-Exam Done monthly Look for anything odd –Lumps –Puckering of skin –Change in nipple –Discharge from nipple –Change in breast size (size changes that aren’t normal) Be sure to check the armpit as well!

Male Reproduction system
20
Male Reproductive System: Words to be familiar with TESTOSTERONEMale hormone SPERMMale sex cell that enters the egg during fertilization. SEMENFluid that contains sperm and secretions from the male glands.
21
Functions of the Male Reproductive System: Produces testosterone Produces, stores, and transports sperm
22
Testes: *Produce sperm & testosterone Testes
23
Epididymis *Transports and stores sperm cells that are produced in the testes. Testes Epididymis
24
Vas Deferens: *Transports mature sperm to the urethra Testes Epididymis Vas Deferens
25
Seminal Vesicle: *Holds the liquid that mixes with sperm to form semen Testes Epididymis Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicle
26
Prostate Gland: *Secretes fluid that nourishes and protects sperm. Testes Epididymis Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicle Prostate Gland
27
Urethra: *Functions as an exit from the body. Releases sperm and urine. Testes Epididymis Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicle Prostate Gland Urethra
28
Penis: *Male reproductive organ Testes Epididymis Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicle Prostate Gland Urethra Penis
29
Scrotum: *Holds the testicles and keep the testicles at an optimal temperature. Testes Epididymis Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicle Prostate Gland Urethra Penis Scrotum
30
Bladder: *Stores urine Testes Epididymis Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicle Prostate Gland Urethra Penis Scrotum Bladder
31
Problems of the Male Reproductive System: 1.INGUINAL HERNIA: the intestine or bladder protrudes through the abdominal wall or into the groin. 2.STERILITY: the inability to produce enough healthy sperm to reproduce. Some causes may be illness or exposure to drugs. 3.ENLARGED PROSTATE GLAND: An enlargement of the prostate that blocks urine flow through the urethra. 4.CANCER: uncontrolled cell growth that destroys healthy tissue. (TESTICLES, PROSTATE)
32
How to take care of the Male Reproductive System: 1.Get regular checkups by a physician. 2.Bathe regularly 3.Wear a protective cup or supporter during athletic activities to prevent accidental injuries. 4.Practice sexual abstinence before marriage. 5.Monthly testicular self-exam
33
Testicular Self-Exam Done monthly Feel each testicle, looking for: –A small, painless lump on the front, side or bottom of the testicle – Abnormal changes in size of testicle –Pain or achy areas in your groin. –Extra fluid in scrotum
