W IND E NERGY Wind power could increase to 5- 10% of our use in the next 50 years. What were early uses of wind energy? A lot of space is needed for wind energy fields.

H YDROELECTRIC P OWER Power of falling water. Drives turbines to generate power. Currently meets 5% of US energy needs. Dams are often built to control the flow of water. Reservoir eventually fills with sediment, rendering the dam useless. Sites must be chosen carefully.

T IDAL P OWER / D AMS Ocean’s energy potential is HUGE! Moving tides are excellent sources of energy. A dam is built to trap water when the tide comes in and slowly release it after the tide is gone. Differential is created that can turn turbines!

G EOTHERMAL E NERGY From underground reservoirs of steam or hot water; this can be used directly for heating or driving turbines. Clean but not everlasting. 10- 15 year lifespan for hot water. Not a long- term solution.
