Chapter 1 Units of Measurement –Length, mass, volume, time, temperature –Units Uncertainty in Measurement –Precision and Accuracy

Significant Figures –Ex. 20.5, 0.076, 100, 15.3 –Math multi and divide, least sig. figs. 41 x 0.03 = 210 / 5.01 = –add and subtract, least dec. pts. 62 – 5.5 = 7.53 + 0.2 =

Scientific Notation A way to write really large or small numbers 150000 = 1.5 x 10 5 0.000043 = 4.3 x 10 -5 Only the sig. figs. are used in sci. notation Be careful when adding/subtracting, make sure powers are equal

Dimensional Analysis Ex. How far do we travel if we drive 3 hours at 60 mi/hr? –3 hr x 60 mi/hr = 180 mi = 200 mi sig. figs. Ex. How many minutes are in 60 years? –60 yr x 365.25 d/yr x 24 hr/d x 60 min/hr

Temperature 0 C, 0 F, K Eq. Tf = Tc x 9/5 + 32 Tk = 0 c + 273 22 0 c = ? 0 f Tf = 22 x 9/5 + 32 = 71.6 0 f 45 0 f = ? 0 c Tc = (45 – 32) x 5/9 = 7.2 0 c

Density Ex.s –What’s the density of a 15 g sample that occupies 5 ml of space? –15 g / 5 ml = 3 g/ml –How much volume does gasoline occupy if you have 5000g and the density is 0.79 g/ml? –5000g x 1ml / 0.79g = 6330 ml = 6000 ml s.f.

Classification of Matter –Mixtures –Solutions Physical changes Separation methods –Filtration –Distillation –Chromatography
