3. List one line from this act that shows the presence of fate in characters’ lives. Romeo: “Then I defy you, stars.” Romeo makes it seem like fate (or the stars) will keep Romeo and Juliet apart, but he will “defy the stars” by making sure they are together in the afterlife.

Think of fate as forces that control characters’ lives over which characters have no control. Actions that happen by no fault of the characters. Fate

4. What aspects of fate have created the situation Romeo and Juliet now face? Friar John was quarantined and couldn’t get the letter to Romeo. Lord Capulet moved the wedding day ahead one day. 15 4. How does Paris die? Romeo and Paris fight, and Romeo kills Paris.

5. When Juliet realizes Romeo has died, how does she try to kill herself? She tries to kiss his lips to get some poison from his lips.

6. How does Juliet ultimately die? She stabs herself with Romeo’s dagger.

7. Why does the Prince say the tragedy is the fault of the Capulets and Montagues? They have been fighting so much that they forced their children to lie about their relationship and find no hope in their situation.

8. How do the tragedies bring the families together? The families stop fighting when they realize what their fighting has done. The Capulets will make a statue of Romeo. The Montagues will make a statue of Juliet.

9. What is ironic about the families coming together? After a tragedy, one would expect the families to fight even more. Instead, the opposite happens. They become friends.
