FACTORS IN POPULATION CHANGE
2
What factors cause a country’s population to change in size? Is our country’s population growing? shrinking? or is it staying relatively stable (not changing)? There are three factors that cause a country’s population to change: 1)the number of births (adds to population) 2)the number of deaths (decreases population) 3)migration (can add to or decrease populations)

The Impact of Migration Define the following migration – the movement of people from one region or country to another region or country migrants – a person who moves from one country or region to another immigrants – a person who comes to a new country to live there permanently emigrants – a person who moves away from a country permanently internal migrants – a person who moves from one region of a country to another

The graph you created examines Canadians’ migration patterns over a five-year period, from July 1996 to July 2001. Compared with people in other countries, Canadians move around quite a lot. Most provinces have grown through migration in recent years. But Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador had more out- migration than in-migration. The economies in these provinces have been suffering, as family farms go out of business and the fishery shrinks.

Immigration from other countries has played an important role in Canada’s population growth for hundreds of years. 1.Examine the graph above. Name two time periods when immigration was high and two periods when immigration was low. (give the years and the reason) 1.Why do you think the sources of immigrants change over the years? Why do you think the sources of immigrants change over the years?
