Alternative Fuels

Why not continue to use oil & coal?

Biomass Hydroelectric Nuclear Wind Solar What's the alternative???

What's Biomass Fuel? Waste of plants and animals to create energy Technology already exists Already in use, 10% of U.S.'s energy (Iowa is #1)

What's hydro-energy ? Hydropower is the energy created by moving water Hydropower today provides about 20 % of the world's electricity and is the main energy source for more than 30 countries Hydropower can't be used in all areas because it needs fast flowing water throughout whole year

Nuclear Power Nuclear energy is energy that is released either by splitting atomic nuclei or by forcing the nuclei of atoms together Nuclear energy is produced by a controlled nuclear chain reaction and creates heat—which is used to boil water, produce steam, and drive a steam turbine Nuclear energy (nuclear power) accounts for about 19 percent of the total electricity generated in the United States, an amount comparable to all the electricity used in California, Texas and New York, three most populous states

Wind Energy Wind energy is mostly used to generate electricity Wind energy could be very soon the cheapest way to produce energy on a large scale, of course in areas with suitable climate conditions Wind energy is more common in Europe than in America, because of favorable climate conditions and the U.S. traditionally relying on fossil fuels

Solar Power Solar Energy is healthiest for the environment of all alternatives Solar energy has many positive uses, such as the production of electricity through photovoltaic cells, and the direct heating of water for a variety of other applications Solar energy is the fastest growing alternative fuel

How do we save our planet from the negative effects caused by the burning of fossil fuels?

Saving Our Planet Obj: Yourself and a partner will do a presentation on an alternative fuel You will answer the following questions: What is it? Who and when was it created as a fuel? Positives to using it Negatives How much would it cost? Overall, why is it a better alternative to fossil fuels?

Directions Display all information on poster board Include graphics (pics, charts, diagrams, graphs) Will present findings in class
