First to the United States Possessed all the factors of production Textiles are the first to industrialize – Samuel Slater smuggled spinning machine design from England to US Railroads play major role in America’s industrialization Entrepreneurs form corporations by selling shares of stock to investors

Then Europe Other countries wanted to copy “British miracle” Took awhile French Rev. & Napoleon’s wars halted trade, interrupted communication, caused inflation Belgium is 1 st – Natural Resources (coal, iron ore) – Transportation (waterways) – British workers

Germany was politically & economically divided in early 1800s So it industrializes sporadically – Resources are spread out but railroads connect major cities – Sent kids to school in Britain – Economic power leads to military power By late 1800s Germany is a major power

The Rest of Europe Sporadic, regional France – Measured & controlled – Agriculture still #1 so avoids social & economic problems caused by industrialization Spain, Austria-Hungary don’t industrialize – Geography makes building roads, canals, and rails difficult

Global Impact of Industrialization Rise of Global Inequality Widens gap between industrialized & non- industrialized countries Will lead to imperialism Need colonies for raw materials & markets Society Transforms Population, health, wealth rise dramatically Rise of middle class creates opportunities for education & democratic participation
