Irony
2
What is Irony? There are three different types of irony. ◦ Verbal Irony ◦ Dramatic Irony ◦ Situational Irony
3
Verbal Irony This is a contrast between what is said and what is meant. It can sometimes be in the form of sarcasm. ◦ Ex. You have just had a really bad day and your walking home from school when suddenly it starts to rain. Your response is “This is just great!”
4
Dramatic Irony This is the difference between what a character believes to be true and what we (the audience) knows to be true. This happens in plays, books and movies. ◦ Ex) You are watching a scary movie and the main character is about to walk into a room where you know the killer is and you scream “don’t go in there!” because you know something the character does not.
5
Situational Irony This is the contrast between what has happened and what was expected to happen. Very common in literature. The events leading up to an unexpected event were misleading. ◦ Ex) When you go to the hair salon and the hair stylist has ugly hair.
