4 How does a group work best? Today, we are going to develop rules for our Literature Circles. most of the work In college and beyond, most of the work you will do will be done in a team or group. all members agree Teams work best when all members agree to follow group defined rules.

5 AGENDA 1) Develop rules individually. 2) Discuss your rules with your team. 3) Come up with a group set of rules. 4) Share best 2 rules with class. 5) Class votes on 4 rules for ALL LC groups.

6 What makes a good rule for a team? 1)The rule should apply to everyone. Anyone should be able to follow it. Q: Is this a good rule? Ex1: Only the smartest or hardest working students should participate.

7 What makes a good rule for a team? 2) The rule should be aligned with an academic purpose. Q: What’s problematic about this rule? Ex2: Once the group decides on a discussion topic, it should only focus on that topic.

8 What makes a good rule for a team? 3) The rule should be specific and realistic. Q: What’s problematic about this rule? Ex2: The group should always complete the worksheet.

9 Additional Guidelines Rules should be positively framed if possible. For example, “All voices deserve to be heard” is better than “Don’t talk over people”
